Joy-D Public Bench Design Project

Project type

Public Bench Design

Date

2022

Location

Hong Kong

The Joy-D Public Bench Design Project was an interdisciplinary team project between myself, a product designer student and two advertising designer students , collaborated with Sino Group and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The aim was to create a sustainable public seating area that promotes social interaction in Lee Tung Avenue, Wan Chai.

We engaged in a community co-design approach, involving local residents through surveys and mock-ups to ensure the benches met their needs. Full-scale prototypes were created using upcycled wood and plywood to test the design’s form and functionality. The manufacturing process used CNC machines to precisely cut the components, then sanded and painted the benches in vibrant colours, promoting sustainability by reusing materials.

The benches now serve as functional seating in Lee Tung Avenue , contributing to both community collaboration and sustainable design, while enhancing public interaction and engagement with the area.
